The yucca is dramatic with its clusters of sharp looking leaves and thick stems. It fits well in a minimal interior and against plain backgrounds.
Mexico, Central and North America
The best known as house plants are Yucca aloifolia (dense head of sharp leaves) and yucca elephantipes (loose head of leaves with a swollen base, like an elephant's foot). The latter is also called spineless yucca or pine lily. White bell-shaped flowers may appear after a number of years.
A sturdy plant that does best in a light spot, but not in full sunlight. Water regularly but let the compost dry out between waterings from spring to autumn and water sparingly in winter. Yucca benefits from a spell outdoors in summer.
FactsThe tips of the leaves are very sharp and can inflict scratches.
