Name

Also referred to as primrose (primula veris). Commercial primula are bred from wild primroses and non candelabra types are also called primroses.

Description

There are four species: primula acaulis, primula malacoides, primula obconica and primula sinensis. The primula obconica has large round heart-shaped flowers, the primula sinensis has more compact flower heads.

Origin

The cooler regions of the Yunnan province of China.

Care tips

Primulas flower in winter and spring. They should be kept cool during the flowering season (10-15°C/50-60°F). They enjoy lots of light and sunshine in the morning and evening. Soil should be kept moist.

Facts

Some people are skin-sensitive to the leaves of the primula obconica.
